Nuwara Eliya

Often called “Little England,” Nuwara Eliya is the highest town in Sri Lanka and the capital of the tea country. With its colonial-era bungalows, rose gardens, and a climate that calls for sweaters and log fires, it offers a completely different vibe from the rest of the island.

The Heritage of High-Grown Tea: Culture

The history of Nuwara Eliya is written in tea leaves. At 1,889 meters above sea level, this region produces some of the most refined “High-Grown” Ceylon teas in the world.
Historic Tea Estates: The slopes surrounding the town are a patchwork of famous estates like Pedro Tea Estate and Somerset. We recommend a visit to these factories to see the 19th-century machinery still in action and to enjoy a fresh cup on a terrace overlooking the emerald valleys.
The Old Post Office: Located in the heart of the town, this 1894 Tudor-style red-brick building is one of the most photographed landmarks in Sri Lanka. It still functions as a post office today, and sending a postcard from here is a quintessential Nuwara Eliya tradition.
Victoria Park: A stroll through this beautifully maintained park feels like walking through a classic English garden, filled with rare birds and vibrant blooms that thrive in the cool mountain air.

Into the Silent Plains: Nature

Just a short drive from the town center lies a high-altitude plateau that feels like another planet entirely.
Horton Plains National Park: This is a silent, windswept world of montane grasslands and cloud forests. It is a vital watershed for the island and home to unique wildlife like the sambar deer and the highland leopard.
World’s End: The highlight of the park is a sheer precipice that drops nearly 1,200 meters to the valley floor below. On a clear day, the view extends all the way to the southern coastline.
Baker’s Falls: Along the loop trail of Horton Plains, you’ll encounter this stunning waterfall, named after the famous explorer Sir Samuel Baker. It’s the perfect place to pause and listen to the roar of the water against the silence of the plains.

The Highland Playground: Excitement & Leisure

Nuwara Eliya isn’t just about tea and history; it’s a place for mountain adventure and relaxation.
Lake Gregory: This man-made lake is the center of activity in the town. You can rent a swan-shaped pedal boat, go jet-skiing, or enjoy a pony ride along the shore. At sunset, the lakeside comes alive with street food stalls and a festive local atmosphere.
Hiking Single Tree Hill: For a panoramic view of the town and Lake Gregory without the long trek of Horton Plains, this shorter hike takes you through tea bushes to a summit that offers a bird’s-eye view of the “Little England” landscape.
High Tea at Grand Hotel: For a touch of colonial elegance, enjoying a traditional English High Tea on the lawn of the historic Grand Hotel is an experience you won’t forget.
