Ella

Ella is the adventure capital of the island—a place where the air is cool, the mountains are jagged, and the vibe is purely electric. While most travelers come for the scenery, they stay for the atmosphere.

Architectural Marvels: Culture

The culture of Ella is uniquely tied to its colonial-era engineering and its role as a mountain gateway.
The Nine Arch Bridge: This world-famous viaduct is a masterpiece of early 20th-century construction. Built entirely of brick, rock, and cement—without a single piece of steel—it stands 30 meters high in the middle of a lush jungle.
The Living Tracks: Unlike most historical sites, the bridge is part of a working railway. At SriLanka Roads, we provide you with the updated 2026 train schedules so you can be on the tracks exactly when the “Blue Train” passes over for that iconic photo.

The Verdant Valley: Nature & Tea

In Ella, the jungle doesn’t just surround you; it breathes with you.
Endless Tea Fields: The slopes of Ella are covered in some of the most scenic tea plantations in the world. We highly recommend a visit to the Damro Labookellie Tea Centre. While it’s a scenic drive from Ella towards Nuwara Eliya, it is one of the most prestigious estates where you can see the journey from leaf to cup.
The Cascades: Water is everywhere here. The Ravana Waterfall is the most famous, crashing down right beside the main road, but we also love the “Secret Fall” and Pallewela Waterfall for a quieter, more natural experience.

Above the Clouds: Hiking

If you have a pair of boots and a sense of wonder, Ella will reward you with views that stretch to the horizon.
Little Adam’s Peak: This is the “must-do” hike for everyone. It’s a relatively easy walk through tea estates that ends with a dramatic ridge-line view of the Ella Gap.
Ella Rock: For those looking for a challenge, the trek to the top of Ella Rock is more strenuous but offers a much higher vantage point looking back toward the town and the plains below.
The Pekoe Trail Stages: Several beautiful sections of the Pekoe Trail pass through Ella, offering long-distance walkers a chance to see the “backstage” of the tea industry.

The Pulse of Ella: Excitement & Nightlife

Ella is the only place in the highlands where the party starts when the sun goes down.
Flying Ravana Zipline: Soar at 80km/h over the tea valleys on Sri Lanka’s first mega dual zipline. It is a heart-pounding way to see the landscape from a bird’s-eye view.
Waterfall Swimming: There is nothing quite like diving into the cold, fresh natural pools at the base of a jungle waterfall. We know the safest spots to take a dip away from the heavy currents.
The Nightlife: Ella town comes alive at night. From the legendary Cafe Chill to various reggae bars and hidden garden pubs, the town is packed with travelers sharing stories over cocktails and live music.

Just Beyond: Haputale & Lipton’s Seat

If you have an extra day, let us take you a bit further “up-country.”
Haputale: This town sits on a narrow mountain ridge, often shrouded in a mystical mist. It feels much more authentic and “local” than Ella.
Lipton’s Seat: Located near the Dambatenne Tea Factory, this is where Sir Thomas Lipton used to sit and survey his empire. The 360-degree views are arguably the best in Sri Lanka.
